Fu Man Ji Hainan Chicken Rice
Hawkers of SG #91 – Fu Man Ji Hainan Chicken Rice
We started Fu Man Ji three years ago, selling Hainanese Chicken Rice. We chose to specialise in Hainanese Chicken Rice as my husband had friends and family members that taught him how to cook them.
It’s been three years, and the most challenging part about the hawker trade is how busy it gets. We work long hours, reaching the stall at about 9am and closing at 8pm. Our kids are still young, but it’s hard to bring them with us all the time, as we can’t possibly keep a constant look out at them. Also, it’s a pity that we don’t get to spend much time with our kids.
That said, we love the hawker culture, and it’s important to keep the hawker culture alive. It’s a big part of our heritage. And it’s a place for the older generation to make friends, chit-chat over a cup of kopi. As hawkers, we love to interact with our regulars, and end up becoming good friends. This is a lifestyle.
In fact, the recent Phase 2 Heightened Alert didn’t affect us that much. We have our regulars to thank, as they continued to support us through takeaways.
Our favourite dish on the menu is chicken tail rice. That’s the best part of the chicken – silky smooth and tender. Try it for yourselves here!
